Application area

A sound attenuating grille creates the ideal sound barrier in ventilation openings. It can be used in multiple locations, as air inlets and outlets in both processing plants or naturally ventilated areas. In addition, the grille can be used as screens around ventilated enclosures in process plants, air conditioning systems or electrical generator plants. The grilles can be equipped with mesh and drainage for water. SRI2 is best suited for outdoor use in harsh weather conditions, typically in an offshore environment.

Materials and dimensions

Due to practical considerations, the dimensions of the grilles should not exceed 7 m2. If larger sizes are required, a multi-part solution is recommended. The minimum size of a grate is recommended to be 1 m2.

The material options for the grilles are galvanized steel, aluminium and stainless steel. Painted surfaces for the grilles are available on request. The insulation material used is a mineral wool that is neither toxic nor flammable. It is solidly covered by polyester or fiberglass cloth and a perforated plate. Due to the risk of water ingress, the maximum speed should not exceed 1 m/s.

Noise data

Noise data and pressure loss values are based on the following standards:

- SFS-EN ISO 140-3:1995(1): "Measurement of sound insulation performance of buildings and building elements - Part 2: 1991 Determination, verification and use of precision data. - Part 3: 1995: Laboratory measurements of airborne sound insulation of building elements."

- SFS-EN ISO 717-1:1996(2): "Assessment of sound insulation in buildings and building elements - Part 1: 1996 Airborne sound insulation."

- ISO 5219:1984:: "Air distribution and air dispersion - Laboratory aerodynamic testing and assessment of air terminal units."

- ISO 5135:1997: "Determination of sound power levels of noise emitted by air terminal units, air terminal units, dampers, valves by measurement in a sound chamber."

The sound reduction achieved by a grille depends largely on the sound field and how it is set up. This is why on-site measurements will often vary from laboratory measurements, because the damper on site is affected by background noise and vibrations, among other things.
