HPU for Fenris

The Fenris field is located in the southern part of the Norwegian sector of the North Sea. Nordic Steel has important deliveries for CRE8 Systems to this field.

Approval for development and operation of Fenris was granted in June 2023, and active production is scheduled to start in 2027.

- This project consists of three different structures for CRE8. An HPU, a WHCP, and a TUTU panel for the platform on the field," explains project manager Jarl Ove Andersen, in Nordic Steel.

These are the constructions:

• HPU (Hydraulic Power Unit), is an integral part of FPSO vessels and drilling platforms. The HPU is used for remote control of safety equipment and valves, using pressure. The unit provides a stable and clean supply of hydraulic fluid to topside, remote controlled subsea valves or tools
• WHCP (Wellhead Control System/Panel), provides hydraulic supply to wellhead valves, choke valves, pressure protection system and hot melt plugs. Used, among other things, for monitoring, controlling and shutting down valves
• TUTU (Topside Umbilical Termination Unit), used to start energy and control systems when transporting fluid to/from subsea pipelines to the tanker. Usually a stand-alone, enclosed unit, consisting of valves, pressure gauges, and junction boxes

- "The steel delivery has been a pilot project for us at CRE8. The close collaboration with Nordic Steel's project management and technical department has been valuable to us," says drawing and design manager Aleksander Myklebust of CRE8 Systems.

High quality and Norwegian production

All three units are manufactured and built at Nordic Steel's premises in Bryne. The materials used are mainly stainless acid-proof steel (316L), in addition, the HPU has pipes in Duplex.

Myklebust and Andersen are both pleased with the long and good cooperation between Nordic Steel and CRE8. For over ten years, the companies have developed and built many great projects. The Fenris project is another prestigious delivery for the companies.

- On this project, good dialog, high quality, reliability in delivery and fast delivery have been particularly important factors. There was therefore no doubt in our minds that Nordic Steel was the right partner," says Myklebust.

The delivery helps to provide hydraulics to an unmanned platform, as well as control wells and valves. As the platform is unmanned, there will be minimal people in physical proximity. Only one annual inspection is planned. Therefore, high demands have been placed on the quality and robustness of the delivery.
