New access points to Sandnes station

Sandnes train station has been renovated. When Bertelsen & Garpestad was awarded the project to build new access points to the station, Nordic Steel was chosen to supply the stairs.

In 2024, Bane NOR started two projects to renew the train station in the center of Sandnes.

Before the renovation of the train station, there were two flights of stairs and a ramp at each platform. The ramps had too steep a gradient. So, a staircase and an elevator were installed at each platform to increase accessibility.

The stairs are made of carbon steel, with stainless steel railings.

Nordic Steel has delivered the reddish-brown stairs to Bertelsen & Garpestad.

β€œIt has been a great project, and another good collaboration with Bertelsen & Garpestad,” says Thor Arne Dybdahl, Head of Transportation at Nordic Steel.

Good solution saved construction time

The stairs are made of carbon steel (ST 355), with stainless steel railings (304).

To make the project as efficient as possible, Nordic Steel and Bertelsen & Garpestad came up with a plan that worked perfectly.

– The collaboration with Nordic Steel was good. They assembled most of the parts together in the factory in Bryne. This meant that we had larger assembled sections on the construction site, which helped to shorten the construction time, says Livar Fuglestad, construction manager at Bertelsen & Garpestad.

Dybdahl confirms that the project was carried out in a smart way, and says that it has been a great result.

– We like to come up with effective solutions together with our customers. In addition, it is nice to be part of a project that is so visible in our region.

Sandnes station is a central hub for commuters between Stavanger, Sandnes, Jæren and south.

Fuglestad at Bertelsen & Garpestad says that it has been a great collaboration with good dialogue at all levels.

– The best thing about the project was the good collaboration with all subcontractors, designers and the client. We have delivered a great project together, concludes Fuglestad.
