Large Statnett contract to Nordic Steel

Large Statnett contract to Nordic Steel

A new high-voltage cable tunnel is being built between Sogn and Ulven in Oslo, as part of the work to upgrade the power grid in Oslo. Nordic Steel will deliver 250 tons of cable racks for the tunnel. The contract value is NOK 42.4 million. The tunnel will be 6.6 kilometers long and will run between the Sogn and Ulven transformer stations in Oslo. The power cables will be mounted on racks in the tunnel. It is these racks, made of acid-resistant steel, that Nordic Steel will produce for Statnett.

– We are very pleased that we have renewed trust and won another contract with Statnett. The previous stretch of power cables in the tunnel, from Smestad to Sogn, also has cable racks from Nordic Steel. We are therefore extra proud that we will continue our collaboration with Statnett, and once again win the most stringent requirements for quality, price and environment, says Olaug Byberg Skartland, project manager at Nordic Steel.

250 tons, 3000 racks

The cable tunnel between Sogn and Ulven will accommodate two sets of 420 kV power cables. The current cables date from the 1950s and 60s and will be replaced to ensure a secure power supply in the capital in the future.

– We will deliver a total of 250 tons of racks in acid-resistant steel. There will be more than 3,000 steel racks in total, many of which are the same, and some are special versions. They will be installed throughout the entire 6.6 kilometer long tunnel, explains Skartland.

Renewed confidence

The first cable tunnel between Smestad and Sogn was completed in 2022. Nordic Steel also supplied all the steel racks for this tunnel. The Sogn-Ulven project is quite similar, but the tunnel is more than two kilometers longer.

– We are looking forward to starting the project, with work that suits our production very well. It is actually extra great that we will be doing much of the same thing again, only on an even larger scale. For us, it means that the quality and expertise we showed last time are once again appreciated. The fact that we are once again awarded such a significant public contract, on such an important, demanding and large project, also supports Nordic Steel as Norway's leading competence center within steel, emphasizes Olaug Byberg Skartland.

Statnett is responsible for the Norwegian power system, including the development and operation of high-voltage lines and substations. Construction of the cable tunnel between Sogn and Ulven started in 2023 and is scheduled to be completed in 2029.
