Nordic Steel makes attenuators to stop pink salmon

Theyare unwanted, blacklisted and threaten river ecosystems. Now Nordic Steel is helping to stop pink salmon in rivers in Troms and Finnmark.

Nordic Steel has entered into a framework agreement with the State Governor of Troms and Finnmark, to supply spile attenuators for pink salmon. The framework agreement lasts for two years, with an option for two years. The agreement includes the production of 10 to 15 attenuators per year.

- We are very happy to get the framework agreement with the state manager in Troms and Finnmark. It shows that we are competitive throughout the country. It is nice to be trusted and recognized as a supplier that delivers on price, capacity and environment, says Bjørn Erik Ualand in Nordic Steel.

Criteria and value

The value of the framework agreement is estimated at NOK 16 million, but has a total maximum take-up of NOK 30 million. The criteria for awarding the framework agreement were environment (20 percent), capacity (30 percent) and price (50 percent).

- "We have a large production capacity and are a reliable supplier that can deliver the equipment needed in time for June, as the attenuators must be set in the rivers by then," explains Ualand.

Humpback salmon come to the rivers to spawn in odd-numbered years, so it is important that the attenuators are in place in time for summer this year.

Aluminum fish attenuators

In total, the attenuators used to stop pink salmon consist of guide fences, attenuatorping cages, attenuatorping cage lids and working platforms or ramps.

The attenuators will be temporary, movable installations. They will be installed in the rivers after the spring flood and removed in the fall. The attenuators are made of aluminum, which is lightweight compared to steel, which is an advantage when it comes to portability.

- We look forward to helping to stop the pink salmon in Troms and Finnmark with the attenuators that are now in production with us and will be delivered before the summer," concludes Bjørn Erik Ualand of Nordic Steel.
