- Very good news for land-based aquaculture

Nordic Steel is a key equipment manufacturer to Artec Aqua for the construction of Salmon Evolution. The project is set to become the world's largest land-based salmon farm.

In Salmon Evolution's latest quarterly report, it is clear that the biomass has doubled in recent months. Biomass is a term used for live fish. It is usually measured in tons, and in Salmon Evolution's case, the biomass has increased from 1047 tons as of 30 June 2023 to 2100 tons as of 30 September 2023.

- "It's an adventure to be part of such a successful project for the industry. We have produced important water treatment equipment for Artec Aqua, and have helped to develop it to the standard it is today," says Ola André Synes, Sales Manager for Nordic Steel in Sunnmøre.

- Unique numbers

The facility at Indre Harøy has been in operation since March 2022. Since then, nine batches of smolt have been released. In the latest quarterly report, Salmon Evolution also reports that the mortality rate at the facility ended at 1.5 percent, and that they are on track to achieve a mortality rate of 3-5 percent annually.

- These figures are unique compared to farmed fish in the sea. Here, we see very few dead fish. This is because all parameters are controlled, the water the fish swim in is cleaner, there is less disease, and no other fish enter the tanks," Synes explains.

Nordic Steel is seeing growing optimism in the aquaculture industry and interest from several quarters is increasing.

- "Land-based aquaculture has an exciting future. It's fantastic that we have been able to join Artec Aqua in making a facility like this possible," says Synes.

Production to stage 1

For the plant that is already in operation, Nordic Steel produced CO2 aerators and nitrogen aerators, which remove CO2 and nitrogen from the water by pumping the water at high speed through the aerators.

The so-called DeGasso aerators are based on Artec Aqua's design and water treatment technology, which reduces the CO2 and nitrogen content in the farm's operating water, which is essential to ensure optimal conditions for the fish.

- In addition, we have produced cleaning equipment for the strainers in the fish farming tanks. We have also produced tanks for disinfection and cleaning processes," says Ola Andre Synes.

Nordic Steel is Norway's leading center of expertise in steel, and has many years of experience from installations and projects in aquaculture and the maritime industry.

Typical deliveries to the industry include tanks, cage equipment, lice washers, water treatment equipment, stairs, railings and more.

- "We have a lot to offer in terms of quality production, documentation and on-time delivery. In addition, an understanding of good fish health, function and quality is central to Nordic Steel," concludes Ola André Synes.
