- Nordic Steel is ambitious, has a strong environmental focus and good values. This is what Øyvind Sandve, sales and marketing manager at Stena Recycling in Rogaland, says.
Together, Nordic Steel and Stena Recycling ensure that all steel waste is recycled into new, recycled steel. In the production premises of Nordic Steel, all types of steel waste are sorted and placed in separate containers. Stena Recycling collects, presses and sends the waste for recycling.
- Then we buy back recycled steel that goes to the production of new structures with us, says Børre Lobekk, CEO of Nordic Steel.
Although Nordic Steel is the industry leader in material utilization, we had sent 133,860 kilos of steel waste for recycling at the end of May. That is almost 12,000 kilos more than at the same time last year and a good indicator of high activity. All this becomes new steel, in a remelting process that emits less CO2 than producing completely new steel.
When Nordic Steel was named Environmental Lighthouse of the Year in December 2021, the high proportion of recycled waste was one of the points emphasized by the jury.
- It is not just the steel we recycle. In 2021, we delivered 93 percent of absolutely all waste for recycling. So far in 2022, the share is actually even higher. We set high goals and recycle even more types of waste than before, says Lobekk.
Other criteria in the Eco-Lighthouse award were, among other things, low climate emissions from own premises, the climate commitment and reporting that can give customers lower CO2 emissions. CO2 emissions from own buildings are still lower than a few years ago, even though production is increasing and the company is gaining more employees.
The Nordics' largest art museum, the National Museum in Oslo, recently opened. It was Statsbygg's first project with particularly high environmental requirements. Use of recycled steel was one of the requirements in the project.
- The stone facade of the museum hangs on a specially made suspension system from us. In total, we have delivered 350,000 kilos of acid-resistant steel brackets that consist of up to 80 percent recycled material. We are proud to contribute to the National Museum meeting environmental goals with the construction project, Lobekk explains.
In another contract, on steel racks for Statnett's cable tunnel between Smestad and Sogn in Oslo, the requirement for an environmental system in the company was also an important part of the contract.
- We help our customers with the lowest possible CO2 emissions in their projects and to make the best and most sustainable choices. We have the knowledge, will and ability to contribute to sustainable production, concludes Børre Lobekk.
